How Color Therapy or Chromotherapy Can Heal Your Body

While for an artist the color is the very means of expression and for a pedagogue a visual education system, for the naturopathic practitioner it represents both a diagnostic means and a remedy.

What is chromotherapy used for?

Chromotherapy is a technique used for healing some diseases by using colors. It is based on the characteristic of the human cells to be influenced by electromagnetic waves such as white light and ultraviolet rays. When people suffer from a specific disorder, the electromagnetic field of the body is not balanced anymore, and chromotherapy can alleviate this effect.

Color therapy is done with successive baths of light and irradiation with many different fascicles of color or on different areas of the body.

Is chromotherapy scientifically proven?

Chromotherapy, which has some scientific basis, is just an auxiliary method, and practitioners do not claim they can cure diseases only with the help of colours. They can, however, make some suffering more bearable by influencing (directly or indirectly) certain organs, but more importantly by influencing the psyche.

The meaning of colors in chromotherapy

When it comes to chromotherapy, the most important thing is to know the meaning and characteristics of each color. That is why I am now helping with this small guide of colors.

Red

Red is the color of fire. It stimulates the nervous system, lymphatic vessels and metabolism. It accelerates heart rate and breathing, fights the negative effects of cold and strengthens attention. But it is tiring if viewed too long.

  • Indications: cold treatment, rheumatic pain caused by cold exposure and moisture, anaemia, asthenia, depression, or before sports competitions (for better results).
  • Contraindications: high blood pressure, high fever, mania, sanguine temperament.

Orange

Orange strengthens the respiratory system, fights spasms, stimulates attention, helps with the calcium intake and has an aphrodisiac effect.

  • Indications: Chronic bronchitis, asthma, reduced or absent menstrual periods, kidney disease, impotence, rheumatism, haemorrhoids.
  • Contraindications: none.

Yellow

Yellow stimulates both the nervous and digestive systems along with appetite. It increases muscle tone and secretions of the liver, stomach and pancreas. Yellow light stimulates lymphatic vessels, with calming effects superior to those produced by green and light blue.

  • Indications: hepatic failure, indigestion, migraine, asthenia, melancholia, bronchitis, stimulating attention and memory, especially before exams.
  • Contraindications: hysteria, alcoholism and palpitations.

Green

Green is the color of nature and is the most healing color. It increases confidence, stimulates the creation process, lowers blood pressure, calms, and offers a sense of balance. Green light favours suggestion and autosuggestion, prepares the subject for a hypnosis session, but it is tiring if used in very dark hues.

  • Indications: insomnia, high blood pressure, alcoholism, emotional states, irritability, urinary incontinence.
  • Contraindications: none; provided it is not used in dark hues for a long time.

Turquoise

Turquoise calms, tones up the body, regenerates the skin.

  • Indications: trauma, burns, severe pain, asthenia and overwork
  • Contraindications: none

Blue

Blue soothes and takes away dark, obsessive thoughts. It gives the illusion of cold (especially in dark hues) and of larger space. But it can also give the feeling of suffocation if it is used in dark shade, in a less airy place. Blue light is used in surgical and labour wards thanks to its analgesic and antispasmodic effects. This color can calm sanguine temperaments and it is indicated in nervous breakdown. It is also called the colour of Pure Consciousness, of courage, of the sharpness of mind.

  • Indications: migraine, vomiting, strong cough, insomnia, burns, contusions, neuralgia, bronchial asthma.
  • Contraindications: flu, rheumatic diseases, fatigue, depression, and irritability.

Violet

Violet has a sedative effect. It reduces extra energy, soothes pain and stimulates the intellect. Moreover, it stimulates the production of white blood cells, increases blood pressure and the frequency of heart beats.

  • Indications: rheumatic diseases, neuralgia, insomnia, pain caused by cold exposure, epilepsy, cough, bronchial asthma, fear, cancer.
  • Contraindications: melancholy or depression

It is important to be aware of the fact that chromotherapy does not pose any risk, as long as the colors we choose are suitable and beneficial for what we want to treat.

The effects of chromotherapy are beneficial not only for those who have a certain disease. Let’s just think about how well-coloured walls and properly chosen clothes can help us memorize more easily, sleep better, and have more self-confidence!
